TV Size Calculator

Work out the ideal TV size for your viewing distance, or the best distance to sit from a TV you already have — for 4K and 1080p.

General guidance. TV size and viewing distance figures are general guidance for typical eyesight and a 16:9 screen — not a precise fit for every room or every person.

How the recommendation is worked out

The ideal viewing distance depends on your TV's resolution — 4K packs four times as many pixels into the same screen as 1080p, so you can sit closer (or use a bigger screen at the same distance) before the extra detail stops making a visible difference. As a rule of thumb, the optimal viewing distance is about 1.5× the screen diagonal for 4K, and about 2.5× the diagonal for 1080p. We use that ratio to convert between viewing distance and recommended TV size in both directions. Screen width and height are estimated from the diagonal assuming a standard 16:9 widescreen panel.
