How these percentage calculations work
A percentage is a fraction out of 100. To find X% of Y, divide X by 100 and multiply by Y. To find what percentage one number is of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. Percentage change compares a starting value (A) to an ending value (B): subtract A from B, divide by A, then multiply by 100 — a positive result is an increase, a negative result is a decrease. To increase or decrease a number by a percentage, multiply it by 1 plus (or minus) the percentage as a decimal.
