How the total is built up
Flights are charged per person, accommodation is charged per night for the whole party, and food, activities and local transport are charged per person, per day — multiplied out across the whole trip. Any extras (insurance, parking, pet care) are added as one-off costs, and a spending money buffer — a percentage on top of everything else — covers the unexpected. Dividing the total by however many months remain until the trip gives a simple monthly savings target to hit before you go.
