Baby First Year Cost Calculator

From the pram to the nappies, a baby's first year comes with a real price tag. Add up the one-off essentials and the monthly costs to see your total — with a second-hand scenario to show where you could save.

Estimate only. This is an illustrative planning estimate, not financial or safety advice. Figures are based on the amounts you enter — always follow current safety guidance for car seats and cot mattresses.

First-year total (with childcare)
£2,860
First-year total (without childcare)
£2,860
Monthly average
£238

First-year total spread evenly across 12 months

The second-hand scenario

Buying the pram, the cot frame, and pre-loved clothes second-hand instead of new could save you around £485 (37.3%) on the one-off essentials above.

Never buy a car seat or a cot mattress second-hand — you can't know their full crash or wear history, and both are safety-critical. Always buy these two new.

Ways to cut first-year costs

  • Baby banks and local parent marketplaces (Facebook groups, NCT sales, Vinted) are worth checking before buying anything new — prams, clothes and toys are often donated or sold barely used because babies outgrow them so fast.
  • Clothes and equipment sizes turn over roughly every 2-3 months in year one — buying a huge amount in one newborn size upfront usually means most of it is barely worn before it no longer fits, so little and often (or second-hand) tends to work out cheaper.
  • If you're returning to work, check your eligibility for Tax-Free Childcare (the government tops up what you pay into a childcare account) — most parents can start using it from around 9 months, once childcare costs actually begin.
  • Nappy and formula subscriptions can undercut supermarket shelf prices noticeably — worth comparing before you settle into a routine of ad-hoc top-up shops.

How this is worked out

We add up the one-off essentials — pram, cot & mattress, car seat, a starter clothes bundle and a prep kit — to get your one-off total. Monthly costs (nappies, feeding and ongoing clothes) are multiplied by 12 for the year, and childcare — only counted if you're returning to work — is your monthly childcare cost × the number of months you'll need it. The second-hand scenario applies a typical saving to the pram, the cot frame and the clothes bundle, while leaving the car seat and mattress at full price, since both should always be bought new.
