How decking costs are estimated

Decking cost is priced per square metre and driven mainly by the board material: softwood is the cheapest option but needs regular re-treating; composite costs more up front but needs very little maintenance; hardwood typically costs the most and offers the longest lifespan. The rate already includes the frame, joists, fixings and fitting labour, not just the boards. On top of that, you can add a balustrade or handrail — priced per linear metre of run — and groundwork such as levelling, a membrane and a sub-base, priced per square metre of deck area. Because ground conditions, deck height and access vary from job to job, we show a typical range (±15%) alongside the headline estimate — always get quotes from local landscapers or joiners before committing to a project.
