How company car tax (Benefit-in-Kind) works

If your employer provides a car you can use privately, HMRC treats it as a taxable benefit. The taxable value is the car's P11D value multiplied by an "appropriate percentage" set by its CO2 emissions — 3% for fully electric cars, rising through bands based on electric-only range for plug-in hybrids (1-50 g/km), then up in 1% steps for every extra 5 g/km of CO2 above 54 g/km, capped at 37%. Diesel cars that don't meet the RDE2 standard pay an extra 4 percentage points. You then pay income tax on that taxable value at your marginal rate — 20%, 40% or 45% — usually collected through your tax code via PAYE.
