How UK speeding fines are worked out
Courts use Sentencing Council guidelines that band the offence — A, B or C — by how far the recorded speed was over the limit, and set the fine as a percentage of your relevant weekly income: 50% for Band A (3 points), 100% for Band B (4-6 points or disqualification), and 150% for Band C (6 points or disqualification). The fine is capped at £1,000 for most roads, or £2,500 on a motorway. A minor excess is often instead offered as a Fixed Penalty Notice (£100 and 3 points) or a speed awareness course, avoiding court altogether. The court has full discretion and will weigh up aggravating factors (like poor weather or a school zone) and mitigating ones — the figures here are an estimate, not a prediction of your actual sentence.
