How the AMAP mileage claim is worked out
HMRC's Approved Mileage Allowance Payments let you claim a fixed rate per business mile instead of tracking actual fuel and running costs. For a car or van, the rate is 45p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year, dropping to 25p per mile after that. Motorcycles are a flat 24p per mile and bicycles a flat 20p per mile — neither has a mileage threshold. You can also claim an extra 5p per mile for each passenger who is a fellow employee travelling with you on a business journey. If your employer pays you less than the AMAP rate per mile, you can claim Mileage Allowance Relief (MAR) on the shortfall — the difference between what AMAP allows and what you were actually paid — through a tax return or a P87 form.
