How car depreciation is estimated
Cars lose value fastest in the first few years, then more slowly — a pattern usually modelled as a fixed percentage drop each year, applied to whatever the car is worth at the start of that year (a "declining balance", the same way compound interest works in reverse). This calculator defaults to 18% a year, a commonly quoted average for UK cars, but you can change it: premium marques, EVs and some diesels often depreciate faster, while small, popular, fuel-efficient cars often hold their value better. The year-by-year table shows the estimated value at the end of each year so you can see how much it drops early on versus later in ownership. Mileage matters too — a car driven well above the UK average of around 7,400 miles a year will usually be worth less than this estimate, and one driven well below it may be worth more.
