How bricks needed is estimated
A single-skin wall (one brick thick) needs around 60 standard UK bricks per square metre; a double-skin or cavity wall — two brick leaves with a gap between them — needs roughly double that, around 120 bricks per square metre. We work out your wall's area, add a wastage allowance for breakages and cuts (5-10% is typical for a straightforward wall, more for walls with lots of corners or openings), then multiply by the bricks-per-m² rate for your chosen wall type and round up to a whole brick. Mortar is estimated two ways alongside it: a rough volume in cubic metres, and a bagged-mortar cost per square metre, both added to the bricks cost for a total material estimate. This figure doesn't deduct doors or windows and doesn't include labour — get a local builder or merchant to confirm quantities and prices before ordering.
