How BMR is calculated

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs just to keep you alive at complete rest — breathing, circulating blood, growing and repairing cells. This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, the formula most widely recommended by dietitians today: for men it's 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + 5; for women it's the same but − 161 instead of + 5. Your BMR does not include any activity — if you want your total daily calorie needs including exercise, use our Calorie Maintenance (TDEE) calculator instead. This is an estimate only and doesn't account for muscle mass, genetics or medical conditions — speak to your GP for personalised advice.
