How UK Income Tax and National Insurance work

Income Tax is charged on income above your tax-free Personal Allowance (£12,570) in bands: 20% basic rate, 40% higher rate and 45% additional rate in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland uses its own six-band Scottish Rate of Income Tax, with rates from 19% up to 48%. Class 1 employee National Insurance is charged at 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% above that — the same across all four nations. This calculator shows both taxes together with a full band-by-band breakdown, so you can see exactly where each pound goes.
