How your fair Direct Debit is worked out
Your supplier spreads your estimated annual gas and electricity cost over 12 equal monthly payments, so you pay roughly the same amount every month rather than more in winter and less in summer. Your "fair" Direct Debit takes your expected annual bill (usage × unit rate, plus the daily standing charge × 365) and adjusts it for any credit or debit balance already sitting on your account — a credit balance lowers next year's fair monthly amount, a debit balance raises it. If your actual Direct Debit is a long way from this figure, it's worth asking your supplier to review it. Suppliers set Direct Debits using an estimate of your annual usage, so if your circumstances have changed — you've had works done, moved to fewer occupants, or usage patterns have shifted — the estimate can drift out of date.
