How Inheritance Tax is calculated
Inheritance Tax is charged at 40% on the part of an estate above the tax-free nil-rate band of £325,000. If you're leaving your home to children or grandchildren, an extra £175,000 residence nil-rate band applies — capped at the value of the home if that's lower, and tapering away by £1 for every £2 the estate is worth over £2 million. Both allowances can typically be transferred to a surviving spouse or civil partner, so a widowed person can potentially pass on up to £1 million tax-free.
