How this estimate is worked out
This calculator spreads an indicative average UK household spend on a child across three age bands — 0–4, 5–10 and 11–18 — reflecting research showing costs are typically highest in the early years (equipment, nappies and, for many families, childcare) and again in the teenage years (food, clothing, technology and days out), with a relative dip through the primary-school years. The baseline figures assume an "average" lifestyle with no formal childcare, giving a total of roughly £150,000 (about £8,500 a year) to age 18 for one child. Choosing a "basic" or "comfortable" lifestyle scales every band up or down, and adding part-time or full-time childcare adds a separate cost on top for the 0–4 age band only. Every family's actual costs will differ — treat this as a starting point for planning, not a precise prediction.
